Our dollar has lost almost 60% of its value in the past 8 years (if you look at it compared to the Euro). Vietnam caused Nixon to remove the dollar's attachment to Gold. I think he is talking more about the functionality that things like kdelibs provide or (I forgot the name of the gnome equivalent) as developer they provide you with easy access to many OS/Desktop features and with things like dcop they make integration with other apps something trivial.

there's a discount grocery store in my area (called save-a-lot) where they charge for bags--3 cents for a regular one and 10 cents for a really nice reusable one. They leave their boxes out for people to use for free. I notice that even when people get bags, they don't double bag, and they try to fit more stuff in each bag. It's too bad it's only the cheapo grocery that does this.... Ahem, whole foods?
